BPPV: Natural Recovery & Self-Treatment
Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) often resolves on its own within two to four weeks. However, if symptoms are severe or persistent, medical intervention such as medication or physical therapy may be necessary. Here are some self-care methods to ease symptoms and support natural healing.
Self-Treatment Techniques
1. Habituation Maneuver
- Sit upright, turn your head to one side, then lie down facing up and wait for dizziness to subside.
- Stay in that position for about a minute before sitting up again.
- Repeat the process on the other side. Do this about 10 times in the morning and evening.
2. Brandt-Daroff Exercise
- Turn your head 45 degrees to the right, then lie down on your left side and hold for 30 seconds.
- Sit up straight and stay in that position for 30 seconds.
- Turn your head 45 degrees to the left and lie down on your right side for 30 seconds.
- Repeat the cycle 5 to 10 times.
3. BBQ Roll Maneuver
- Lie on your back with a pillow slightly elevating your head.
- Turn your head to the right and stay in that position for 40 seconds to a minute.
- Slowly turn your head to face the ceiling and hold for another 40 seconds to a minute.
- Roll your head to the left so that you face downward and remain in that position for 40 seconds to a minute.
Preventing Recurrence
1. Vitamin D Supplementation
Vitamin D plays a crucial role in calcium absorption, and a deficiency may weaken otoconia, increasing the risk of recurrence.
2. Sleep Position Adjustments
Sleeping on the opposite side of the affected ear can help prevent recurrence.
3. Lifestyle Modifications
- Get sufficient rest and sleep.
- Avoid sudden or excessive head movements.
- Minimize exposure to strong vibrations or rapid motion changes.
